A slow-draining sink or clogged shower can put a real damper on your day. While some minor clogs can be fixed with a little DIY effort, others require the help of a licensed plumber. Knowing how to clear a clogged drain and when to leave it to the professionals can save you time, money, and frustration.

DIY Tips to Clear a Clogged Drain

If your drain is slow but still somewhat functional, try these safe and simple methods to clear it out.

Boiling Water. For clogs caused by soap scum or grease buildup, slowly pour boiling water down the drain. This can help loosen the residue and flush it away.

Baking Soda and Vinegar. This natural combination can break up mild clogs:

  • Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drain.
  • Follow with 1 cup of vinegar.
  • Let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
  • Rinse with hot water.

Plunger. A plunger can work on kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, and tubs. Make sure there’s enough water in the fixture to cover the plunger bell, and use quick, firm pumps to dislodge the clog.

Drain Snake or Hand Auger. A small drain snake is great for pulling hair or other soft clogs from bathroom drains. Feed the snake into the pipe until you feel resistance, twist, and pull it out slowly.

Remove the Trap (for Sinks). For clogged sinks, you may need to remove the P-trap (the curved section under the sink) to manually clean out buildup or foreign objects. Place a bucket underneath before loosening the connections.

When to Call a Plumber

Not every clog can be fixed with a plunger or baking soda. Sometimes, deeper or more serious problems require professional tools and expertise.

Call a licensed plumber if:

The clog keeps coming back-Recurrent clogs often mean there’s a deeper blockage in your system.

Multiple drains are clogged at once- This could signal a blockage in your main sewer line, which needs immediate attention.

Water is backing up- If water backs up into sinks, tubs, or toilets, call a plumber to prevent flooding or contamination.

There are foul odors coming from your drains- Persistent odors may mean there’s a hidden blockage or buildup of bacteria.

DIY methods aren’t working- If home remedies aren’t clearing the clog, don’t risk damaging your pipes—call in the pros.

You hear gurgling noises- Gurgling drains may indicate air trapped by a blockage, especially in vent pipes or sewer lines.
